As winter transforms the Southwest into a snowy wonderland, it's important to consider the impact on your solar system's efficiency. The accumulation of snow on the solar panels prevents sunlight from reaching the photovoltaic cells, leading to decreased power generation. In addition, the weight of snow and ice can damage the panels. When snow depths reach 18” or greater, the snow must be removed. The tools we recommend using are plastic extendable snow roof rakes or soft bristle brooms. These can be purchased online or at various stores around Durango. For ease of removal, the snow does not need to be removed so the glass is completely clear of snow, as the sun will melt the last 1-2 inches rapidly.
Removing snow prevents damage to your solar panels while allowing them to efficiently capture sunlight. By being proactive, you not only optimize energy production but also ensure the longevity of your solar investment. Rest easy knowing your solar is working efficiently through the winter.
