Durango Solar Gardens One and Two

Shaw Solar has completed the very first Community Solar Garden in La Plata County. Solar gardens are large solar arrays of which community members can buy or lease shares. The energy produced by their share is then attributed to the electric meter at their home or business through virtual net metering. In this way, individuals can reap the environmental and financial benefits of solar power, regardless of whether they rent, have poor solar access or roof space, or don’t have the upfront capital to invest in a system of their own.

We have built¬†Solar Gardens at two prime solar sites‚ÄĒ a 204 kilowatt (kW) garden in Ignacio and a 50 kW garden on the roof of¬†the Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County. Our gardens allow solar power to be delivered to homes and businesses that might otherwise be unable to ‚Äúgo solar‚ÄĚ, and make clean, alternative energy accessible to everyone.

Durango Solar Garden members can go solar and start saving on their energy costs without a large up-front expense. What they gain is instant access to solar, what they give up is the responsibility of owning their own system, because we monitor, maintain, insure, and guarantee the production of the  system.

Utility rates will continue to rise in the future. By signing up for the Durango Solar Garden, as rates rise, your savings will multiply. But not only will you be saving money, you will also have the peace of mind of knowing your home or business is powered by clean, local energy from the sun. The average Durango Solar Garden member will offset 4.77 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, which is equivalent to the savings from not driving your car for an entire year, or planting 122 trees!

Membership for the Durango Solar Garden is currently full. However, contact us if you would like to join our wait list, and we will notify you when a solar garden share is available. We are still waiting for LPEA to decide if new projects will be authorized in 2015.
